Tribal farmers earn Rs 10 crore by cultivating bitter gourd, govt also helped

Bhopal: 300 farmers from about 10 villages in the buffer zone area of core forest of Kanha National Park in Birsa, a tribal-dominated area development block in Balaghat district of Madhya Pradesh, produced hybrid bitter gourd from micro-irrigation system using high technology. Through this, he has shown a new direction to other farmers. Farmers have earned five times more than other traditional crops by cultivating bitter gourd during the Corona period. Most of the farmers are from Baiga, a special backward tribe living in the Balaghat district.

These farmers were first given a micro-irrigation system by the government. 10 to 12 young people from other farmers' families who were working in the city had also left their work in the Corona period and returned home. Those youngsters also took interest in bitter gourd cultivation and produced about 8 to 10 tonnes of bitter gourd per farmer. From March to May, farmers in tribal-dominated areas have grown 2500 to 3000 tonnes of bitter gourd in their fields. Farmers have earned rs 1 to 2 lakh per acre from bitter gourd cultivation.

Bitter gourd cultivation has provided employment to local youth during the crisis of the corona epidemic. The goods carriers also got local work in transporting the farm goods of the farmers to the mandi daily. Farmers have earned Rs 8 to 10 crore by sending 2500 tonnes of bitter gourd from Birsa development block to Mandis in other states.
