Malaysia reports first Omicron variant case: Health Minister

Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia's first case of the Omicron variant of Covid-19 has been detected, according to Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin. The sources said, the person is a non-Malaysian student from South Africa who came in the nation on November 19, according to Khairy. He stated that there is no immediate cause for alarm because the individual was confined upon arrival, with contact tracing and exposed individuals being examined. "The case was handled on its own at the centre, and the student followed the orders given based on the investigation. The patient has been fully immunised and has no signs or symptoms "he stated

Foreign individuals from eight African nations with a high risk of Omicron infections were denied admission on December 1 by the ministry. For the time being, visitors from Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Malawi would not be permitted to enter Malaysia. The prohibition also applies to anyone who have visited certain countries or locations during the previous 14 days.

Following the detection of cases involving the Omicron variant, Khairy further stated that travellers from many countries and regions are temporarily restricted from participating in the Langkawi international travel bubble programme.
