Mamata Banerjee in Padmavati row, “assault of the freedom of expression”

New Delhi: although the producers of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's film Padmavati have postponed the screening date “willingly”, the hullabaloo surrounding the Deepika Padukone-starrer rebuff to stop.

Legitimizing the remonstration by the several groups, chief ministers of Punjab and Madhya Pradesh on Monday confirmed that they would not permit the movie that “distorts historical facts” to screen in their states.

Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh stated reporters on Monday, “Nobody will agree to the distortion of historical facts and those who are protesting are fittingly doing so”.

On Sunday, Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav PrasadMaurya had declared that he would not allow the Deepika Padukone-starrer be aired in the state “without essential cuts”.

On the other hand, the makers of the movie almost certainly did have some reason to joyfulness after the Supreme Court discarded another plea challenging a stay on the release of the film.

Turning down a plea lodged by a lawyer, the Supreme Court quoted, "We cannot get in the way of CBFC's work," and declared that the Censor Board should be permitted to do its job.

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee supported the movie and destined the protests against it, calling it a “super emergency” and an assault on the freedom of expression in the nation.
