Along with Ram Charan, Karan Johar, Siddharth Roy Kapur, Mani Ratnam and Chaitanya Tamhane, M.M. Keeravani, Chandrabose, K.K. Senthil Kumar, and documentary filmmaker Shaunak Sen, RRR's star NTR Jr. has been invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the organisation behind the Oscars, as a new member. As the academy cut back after working to double the number of women and people of colour members, in response to calls to boycott the glitzy Oscars and an irate social media backlash under the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite due to a lack of diversity, 398 new people are about half the number of recent years. "The Academy is proud to welcome these artists and professionals into our membership. They represent extraordinary global talent across cinematic disciplines, and have made a vital impact on the arts and sciences of motion pictures and on movie fans worldwide," said Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Janet Yang. There are currently over 10,000 members of the Academy. These individuals will play a number of roles, including but not restricted to voting for the Oscar nominees. Several Indian performers made a big impression at the Oscars earlier this year. For RRR's Naatu Naatu, MM Keeravani and Chandrabose won the Oscar for Best Song. The Elephant Whisperers, an Indian production, won Best Documentary Short. All That Breathes by Shaunak Sen was also a contender for Best Documentary. The Academy only sends out one round of invitations a year because it is regarded as the highest authority in the Hollywood film industry. Voting for Oscar winners is restricted to Academy members. The Oscars are scheduled for March 10 of the following year. The academy reported that of the class of 2023, 40% identify as women, 34% are from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups, and 52% are from 50 different countries and territories outside of the United States.
