Manipur Ravaged by Severe Storms: Homes Damaged, Schools Shut, Climate Crisis Highlighted

Severe storms hit Manipur causing widespread damage -Severe storms lashed various parts of Manipur on Sunday, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. Officials reported extensive damage to homes, especially in areas like Canchipur and Tera in Imphal West, where hailstones punched holes through tin roofs. Videos circulating online captured the intensity of the storms, with strong winds tearing apart makeshift shelters in different regions.

The Meteorological Department issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall across several Northeastern states, including Manipur, until May 7. Videos shared on social media showed hail blanketing many areas, while trees were uprooted by the fierce winds. Climate activists attributed the havoc to rampant deforestation in the state, highlighting it as a consequence of climate change.
