Market Closing: Sensex falls 189 points, Nifty settles 15,900,

Equity benchmark indices, Sensex and Nifty settledlower Monday dragged by selling in IT and financial services. Broader markets outperformed the benchmarks. On closing,  close, the BSE Sensex was down 189.45 points at 52735.59, and the NSE VNifty was down 45.70 points at 15814.70. About 1826 shares have advanced, 1420 shares declined, and 147 shares are unchanged.

HDFC Life, Titan Company, TCS, Shree Cements and Coal India were among major losers, while Divis Labs, Dr Reddys Labs, Hindalco, Tata Steel and Tech Mahindra were major gainers.

Sectorally, Nifty IT, Nifty Media and Nifty Financial Services declined, while gains were seen in PSU Bank, metals and pharma indices. Nifty PSU Bank, pharma and metal indices gained 1-2 percent, while IT, energy and infra indices witnessed selling pressure. BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices up 0.4 percent each.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday announced some economic relief measures to aid the revival of sectors badly hit by the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic, which did not see a positive impact on the market. Sitharaman announced eight relief measures, out of which 4 of the measures are new ones.
