Maruti Suzuki Achieves Milestone with Over 2 Million Cars Delivered Through Indian Railways

Maruti Suzuki (MSIL) has achieved a significant green milestone by delivering over 2 million cars through the Indian railways. This makes them the first Indian automaker to reach this environmentally friendly target, the company announced on Monday.

Massive Increase in Rail Usage

The use of rail transport by Maruti Suzuki has surged by more than 600%, with dispatches rising from 65,700 units in FY 2014-15 to 447,750 units in FY 2023-24. This shift is projected to save 10,000 metric tonnes of CO2 and 270 million litres of gasoline over the next decade. A corporate statement highlighted Maruti Suzuki’s commitment to creating a greener and less congested future through increased rail use.

Impressive Growth in Rail Dispatches

In the fiscal year 2023-24, Maruti Suzuki India increased its use of railways for car dispatches by 21.5%. This marks a substantial rise from around 5% in FY 2014-15, showcasing more than six-fold growth over the past decade. “Through our focus on green logistics, we’ve achieved notable results, including cutting around 10,000 metric tonnes of CO2 emissions and saving about 270 million litres of fuel,” said Hisashi Takeuchi, Maruti Suzuki’s Managing Director and CEO.

Future Plans and Sustainability Goals

With plans to nearly double production capacity from 2 million to 4 million units by FY 2030-31, Maruti Suzuki aims to increase railway-based shipments by about 35% over the next 7-8 years. Takeuchi reiterated Maruti Suzuki’s commitment to India’s Net Zero Emissions goal for 2070.

Infrastructure Enhancements

Earlier this year, as part of the PM Gati Shakti project, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated India’s first automobile in-plant railway siding at Maruti Suzuki’s Gujarat plant. This facility can dispatch around 300,000 automobiles per year. Another railway siding is under development at the Manesar site and is expected to be operational soon.

Aligning with Government Goals

Maruti Suzuki’s increased use of rail transport not only boosts efficiency but also aligns with government objectives for sustainable development and reduced carbon emissions in the automotive sector.
