Marvel artist receives backlash from fans for body shaming Black Panther 2's Namor actor

Tenoch Huerta, a Mexican actor, will make his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in the soon-to-be-released movie Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. The actor plays the well-known character Namor the Submariner, who is making his first appearance on the big screen. But not everyone appears to be pleased with his casting. Marvel artist Mike Deodato Jr. criticised the actor's physique on Tuesday by posting a comparison of his own body with the actor's, which he later deleted. However, the body shaming did not go down well with fans, and Mike received harsh criticism on Twitter.

The Black Panther 2 teaser that was released earlier this month shows Tenoch's Aztec-inspired appearance. Mike was drawn in by a shot of the actor from the back. He posted images of both a screenshot from the trailer and a back view of himself in the nude on Tuesday. He wrote alongside, “You can tell somebody screwed things up when a character from a movie looks in worst shape than the 60 years old artist who drew him.” By Wednesday morning, he had deleted the post.

Brazilian comic book creator Mike Deodato Jr. has contributed to a variety of Marvel and DC series, such as Batman, Wonder Woman, Captain America, The Invincible Iron Man, Avengers, and Amazing Spider-Man. Many admirers laughed when he made the actor comparison. “I learned today that Mike Deodato Jr must be on one hell of a hallucinogen if he thinks his bod is better than Heurta's,” wrote one fan. Another tweeted, “Body shaming to start the week and thinking you are fitter than a man playing a literal god.” Many fans called him delusional and some even implied the post was racist in nature, criticising a person of colour.

Mexican actor Tenoch Huerta, 41, has a long resume of work in Spain and Latin America. His breakthrough Hollywood role was as Namor. The 30th movie in the MCU is Ryan Coogler's Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. In addition to Martin Freeman and Angela Bassett, it features Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong'o, Danai Gurira, Winston Duke, Florence Kasumba, Dominique Thorne, Michaela Coel, and Angela Bassett. On November 11, the movie will be released, with a new figure assuming the role of Black Panther in the wake of actor Chadwick Boseman's passing.
