MCC to review overthrow rules

LONDON: The Conservatives of Cricket Laws, the Merrillbone Cricket Club (MCC) can review the law after the 'overthrow' controversy over the ICC World Cup final between New Zealand and England.

England were six runs from overthrow in the last over in the final. Martin Guptill's throw was hit by Ben Stokes' bat and went across the boundary line. England tied the match and then missed the super over tie, after which 'Boundary' was counted and England became champions.

Sri Lanka's Kumar Dharamsena and South Africa's Marias Erasmus were field umpires who gave England six runs. Former ICC international umpire Simon Taffel said it was a very bad decision. They (England) should have been given five runs and not six runs. The incident took place in the last over of the match. The TV replay made it clear that Adil Rashid and Stokes had not completed the second run when Guptill made the throw.

But field umpires Kumar Dharamsena and Marias Erasamus added six runs to England's account. Four runs from the boundary and two runs that the batsmen had run. According to the Sunday Times report, the MCC has an idea to take into account the rules of overthrow, which is the responsibility of its sub-committee, the next time the rules of the game are reviewed.
