Mehbooba Mufti Alleges Imposition of Section 144 in Pulwama

Srinagar: PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti alleged that authorities have imposed section 144 in Pulwama district ahead of the voting for the newly created Anantnag-Rajouri Lok Sabha constituency, where she is contesting. According to Mehbooba Mufti, this move is unprecedented, and her party workers are being detained. She criticized the Election Commission of India, accusing it of creating a drama of elections while using government machinery to support proxy groups.

Mehbooba Mufti further highlighted the harassment faced by PDP workers, with instances of selective detentions and harassment at police stations. She cited the detention of a 70-year-old party worker, Azam Khan, who was released after two days. Invoking former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, she emphasized the importance of free and fair elections in Jammu and Kashmir, warning against any attempts to rig the elections.

The Anantnag-Rajouri parliamentary constituency is headed into Lok Sabha polls in the sixth phase on May 25. Jammu and Kashmir have a total of 5 Lok Sabha seats, including Baramulla, Srinagar, Anantnag-Rajouri, Udhampur, and Jammu. The voting in Jammu and Kashmir is being held in five phases. The 2024 Lok Sabha elections are being held in seven phases, running from April 19 to June 1. The counting of votes and results will be declared on June 4.
