In order to promote sports, Mizoram deputy chief minister Tawnluia laid the foundation stone of Aizawl Indoor Stadium. The project, to be constructed at a cost of Rs 763.45 lakh, has been funded by the Union ministry of youth affairs and sports under the Khelo India scheme. The Indian government has already sanctioned Rs. 450 lakh for the project. Laying the foundation stone, Tawnluia, who is also the urban development and poverty alleviation (UD&PA) minister, said the Mizoram government is taking solid steps to promote sports in the state. He said the football ground at Aizawl’s Durtlang locality will be upgraded into the biggest football ground in the state as part of Aizawl smarty city project under the UD & PA department. Football grounds at Zemabawk and Chite will be expanded and new football grounds will be constructed at Hlimen, Edenthar and Tuivmit within the jurisdiction of Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC). sports minister Robert Romawia Royte, Rajya Sabha member K. Vanlalvena and Mamit MLA H. Lalzirliana and others attended the foundation laying ceremony on Thursday. Robert Romawia Royte, who graced the event as a guest of honour, said the proposed indoor stadium, meant for volleyball, will be constructed in such a manner that it could host national level tournaments.
