PM Modi Reaffirms India’s Support for Bhutan’s Development Projects

India and Bhutan Strengthen Ties: Prime Minster Narendra Modi Supports Gelephu Mindfulness City and Hydropower Projects During Talks with King Wangchuck

On December 5, 2024, India and Bhutan renewed their commitment to deepening their strong partnership in various sectors. During a visit by Bhutanese King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed India's support for Bhutan's economic growth and development.

The discussions between PM Modi and King Wangchuck, who was accompanied by Queen Jetsun Pema, centered on strengthening cooperation in areas like hydropower, urban development, connectivity, trade, investment, and space technology.

A key highlight of the talks was India's ongoing support for the Gelephu Mindfulness City Project. PM Modi assured that this initiative would not only boost Bhutan's prosperity but also enhance investment and economic ties between the two nations, benefiting border areas as well.

The leaders also expressed satisfaction with the progress of the 1,020 MW Punatsangchhu-II hydropower project, which is close to completion.

This visit comes at a time of regional shifts, with India navigating diplomatic challenges. Nepal’s Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli has focused on strengthening ties with Beijing, while in Bangladesh, India's relationship with the interim government remains strained after Sheikh Hasina's departure.

King Wangchuck’s visit also involved discussions on mutual regional and global concerns, reinforcing the shared vision of India and Bhutan for economic stability and growth in the Himalayan region.
