South Korean President Moon Jae-in has appointed two deputy directors of the National Intelligence Service (NIS) on Friday, according to the presidential office. Moon Jae-in named Park Sun-won, the head of the National Intelligence Service's planning and coordination office, as the first deputy director, and Chun Se-young, a senior official with the NIS's counter-espionage squad, as the second deputy director. The first deputy director is in charge of gathering intelligence on North Korea and international events, while the second is in charge of espionage and terrorism. According to the office, Park is a long-time intelligence official with skills in counter-espionage, while Chun is a long-time intelligence official with expertise in North Korea and international affairs. The President said that by isolating the National Intelligence Service from politics, it will be able to function solely as an intelligence organisation.
