Seoul: South Korean President Moon Jae-in urged his government to make all-out efforts on Thursday to put the coronavirus outbreak under control, according to his spokesperson. According to sources, he gave the decision just hours after South Korea reported an all-time high of 3,292 new daily cases as the country transitions under the government's "living with Covid-19" scheme. "The President directed that the government conduct watertight operations of the anti-virus and health-care systems, as well as make all-out measures to stabilise the situation," Park Kyung-mee, a spokesperson for the president, told reporters. "Given the rise in infections among senior folks and the rise in severely ill patients," she added urging for a comprehensive medical response. South Korea has experienced an increase in breakthrough infections as vaccine effectiveness has diminished since the first shots were given earlier this year, and the government's "living with Covid-19" scheme has eased virus restrictions. On Thursday, there were 506 critically ill Covid-19 patients, down 16 from the previous day's high of 522. Health officials previously stated that the country's present medical capability can handle up to 500 such individuals.
