KIEV, Ukraine – During a surprise visit to the war-torn country, US First Lady Jill Biden visited her Ukrainian counterpart Olena Zelenska. Jill Biden's visit on Sunday coincided with International Mother's Day, so she tweeted a photo of herself and Zelenska with the caption: "On this Mother's Day, my heart is with you, First Lady Olena Zelenska, and all of Ukraine's brave and resilient mothers." The two First Ladies met at a school in Uzhhorod, a border town between Slovakia and Ukraine. This was Zelenska's first public appearance since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, according to the BBC. "I wanted to be with Ukrainian women and their children this Mother's Day," Jill Biden declared in a series of tweets. Far too many Ukrainians have been forced to evacuate their homes in recent months, leaving behind their loved ones." "As a mother, I can only image the anguish and anxiety they must be experiencing on a daily basis as a result of Russia's unjustified strike." She stated, "I have seen firsthand how the people of Slovakia and Romania have opened their homes, schools, hospitals, and hearts." "Together, we are united for Ukraine," the First Lady continued. "I hope that by being here, I can convey how much their courage and perseverance inspire the rest of the world, and that they know they are not alone." Jill Biden's decision to visit the country while the conflict rages, Zelenska said, was a "courageous act." "We feel your love and support on such a special day," she remarked, emphasising the significance of the visit on Mother's Day.
