Mumbai is on high alert as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of high tides after heavy rains lashed the city. On September 28, waves struck Marine Drive, and the city recorded a temperature of 28.7 degrees Celsius with 7% humidity at 10:00 AM.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) alerted citizens on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) about high tides expected around 9:40 AM. IMD has also placed the districts of Dhule, Nandurbar, Jalgaon, Akola, Amravati, and Buldhana on yellow alert due to ongoing weather conditions. The IMD forecasts moderate rain in Mumbai today, with a yellow alert issued for the broader state of Maharashtra.
The Regional Meteorological Centre predicts generally cloudy skies with moderate rainfall for today and tomorrow, with wet spells expected to continue over the next five days. Today's maximum and minimum temperatures are projected to be around 30 and 24 degrees Celsius, respectively. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Mumbai's Air Quality Index (AQI) registered at 29, categorizing it as 'good' at 10:30 AM.
In recent days, Mumbai has experienced continuous heavy rainfall, including a landslide at the Mumbra bypass on September 25 at around 11:30 PM. In response to the weather conditions and the IMD's red alert, city authorities declared a holiday for all schools and colleges on September 26. Similarly, Pune district administration also announced closures for educational institutions due to the severe weather.
IMD's latest bulletin highlights the likelihood of isolated heavy rainfall over Madhya Maharashtra on September 28, with light to moderate rains expected across the region until September 30. From October 1 to 4, scattered light to moderate rain is anticipated. The weather report also noted a cyclonic circulation that originated on September 26 over north Madhya Maharashtra and has since moved towards southwest Madhya Pradesh, extending up to the middle tropospheric levels.
