India’s got latent controversy: NCW summons Ranveer Allahabadia, Samay Raina and others, hearing on February 17

Ranveer Allahabadia, known as BeerBiceps, a famous podcaster and entrepreneur who is facing criticism and backlash currently, over his offensive remarks on Samay Raina’s show India’s got Latent is now summoned by National Commission for Women (NCW). The comments went viral on social media, and seems unacceptable to the netizens. Not only social media users, but other influencers and politicians are also reacting to his remarks, demanding an action calling the statements ‘abusive’ and ‘inappropriate’.

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has issued summons against Ranveer Allahabadia, Samay Raina, Apoorva Makhija, Jaspreet Singh, Aashish Chanchlani among others present at the show. India’s got Latent’s producers Tushar Poojari and Saurabh Bothra are also summoned by NCW. The hearing has been scheduled on February 17.

Moreover, the Maharashtra Cyber Department also lodged an FIR against the artists present in the recent episode of the show. The department is also issuing summons to as many as 30 guests who have participated in the show from the first episode till now.

Prior to this, an FIR was filed in Assam against Ranveer Allahabadia, Samay Raina and the other panel of judges present at the show. Mentioning about this, Assam Chief minister took to X posting that an FIR was filed against them for “promoting obscenity and engaging in sexually explicit and vulgar discussion on the show”.

The controversy

The controversy erupted when Ranveer Allahabadia asked a controversial question to a contestant in the sixth episode of Samay Raina’s Youtube show India’s got Latent. He asked, “Would you rather watch your parents have sex every day or join them to finish it once and for all?”

The question was laughed at by the judges panel on the show, with some in the audience even hitting for an applause. However, the video left the viewers outraged, with critics calling the remarks inappropriate, vulgar and inappropriate. Along with the criticism, the users also mocked the situation with memes. Some even went on reflecting how unrestricted humor is becoming problematic and stressing over the need for responsible content creation.

Ranveer Allahabadia issues public apology

Following the uproar and severe backlash, Ranveer Allahabadia issued a public apology. Taking to X, Allahabadia wrote, “I shouldn’t have said what I said on India’s got latent. I’m sorry.” The Youtuber also released a video stating, “My comment wasn’t appropriate. It wasn’t even funny. Comedy is not my forte.” Further adding, “I’m just here to say sorry. Many of you asked if this is how I wished to use my platform, and obviously, this is not how I wish to use it. I am not going to give any context or justification or reasoning behind whatever happened. I’m just here for any apology.”

Allahabadia admitted that it was a lapse in judgement, his comments insensitive and not in line with his usual content. He said, “I wasn’t cool on my part. The podcast was watched by people of all ages. I don’t want to be the kind of person that takes responsibility lightly, and family is the last thing I would disrespect. Need to use this platform better. That’s been my learning from this whole experience. I promise to just get better.”

Now, NCW is also into foray and the controversy is circulating further. Even Ranveer Allahabadia’s apology is meeting with mixed responses. Some pointing out at his regret, while some questioning about his judgement on the platform.
