NEW DELHI: Vice Admiral Atul Anand, AVSM, VSM assumed charge as the Director General Naval Operations today, April 1, 2023. He received his commission into the Indian Navy's Executive Branch on January 1, 1988. He graduated from the National Defense College in New Delhi, the Defence Services Command and Staff College in Mirpur, Bangladesh, and the National Defense Academy's 71st Course, Delta Squadron. In Hawaii, United States, at the Asia Pacific Centre for Security Studies, he also took the esteemed Advance Security Cooperation Course. His educational background includes a BSc, MPhil, and MSc in Defence and Strategic Studies, as well as a Masters in Defence Studies. He has held various important positions in his naval career, including command of the corvette INS Khukri, the destroyer INS Mumbai, the missile boat INS Chatak, and the torpedo recovery vessel IN TRV A72. He is a recipient of the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and the Vishisht Seva Medal. He was also the Directing Officer of the Sea Harrier squadron INAS 300, the Executive Officer of the destroyer INS Delhi, and the Navigating Officer of the IN ships Sharda, Ranvijay, and Jyoti. Joint Director Staff Requirements, Directing Staff at the Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, Director Naval Operations, and Director Naval Intelligence are just a few of his notable staff roles (Ops). At the Ministry of Defence's Integrated Headquarters, he also held the positions of Principal Director Naval Operations and Principal Director Strategy, Concepts, and Transformation (Navy). He has held the positions of Flag Officer Commanding Maharashtra Naval Area and Flag Officer Commanding Karnataka Naval Area while serving as Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Foreign Cooperation and Intelligence), Deputy Commandant, and Chief Instructor at the National Defence College, Khadakvasla.
