Rs. 2000 notes printed when Rajan was the governor but carry Patel’s signature

The newly launched 2,000 rupee banknotes carry the signature of present central bank chief Urjit Patel but the process of printing notes began when his predecessor Raghuram Rajan was still in office.

According to the report by two Reserve Bank of India, it is said that ‘’the first stage of the printing process of Rs 2000 notes were initiated on August 22''. Significantly, this was just a day after Urjit Patel was named as his successor. Patel however, took over from Rajan on September $, 2016.

This then raises the question as to how Urjit Patel’s signatures were present on the notes.

The note ban decision raised several doubts about the RBI’s autonomy. Rajan’s silence on the issue and his decision not to extend his tenure led to speculation that he was not on board with the move.
