No More Scotch in Army Canteen? Modi Govt Bans Imported finished Goods

The government-controlled Canteen Stores Department (CSD), which operates canteens for the defence forces gave a big blow to companies ranging from FMCG and liquor to consumer durables and footwear.  According to the report, the government has ordered 4,000 army shops in the country to stop buying imported goods. 

According to the report, CSD  is all set to ban all directly imported items that includes the items that are shipped from other countries in finished form. In the liquor segment,  for example, Scotch brands that are bottled in Scotland will be banned but people can still enjoy the those that have imported ingredients but bottled in India. This decision will give a major blow to  foreign liquor firms —Diageo and Pernod Ricard. is set to ban all ‘direct imported’ items.

Mentioning  the October 19 internal order from the defence ministry, a news agency reported that in the future, “procurement of directly imported items shall not be undertaken.” The order asserted that the matter had been addressed with the armed forces including n May and July and was intended to support Centre’s ‘Vocal for Local’ call and Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan.
