Noel Tata has officially assumed the position of chairman of Tata Trusts, stepping into the role after the passing of his half-brother, Ratan Tata. The announcement of Noel Tata’s appointment was confirmed by CNBC TV18 on Friday, highlighting the continuity of leadership within the organization during this time of transition.

As a member of the Tata family, he has been involved with various ventures within the Tata Group, contributing to its growth and expansion. Noel Tata is already a trustee of the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and the Sir Ratan Tata Trust, which together own 66% of Tata Sons, the holding company of the Tata Group. There has been a strong consensus within the Parsi community to appoint someone with the Tata surname as the successor, and Noel Tata has emerged as the unanimous choice. Currently, Tata Trusts have two key figures—Venu Srinivasan of TVS and former defense secretary Vijay Singh—serving as vice-chairmen since 2018.
Known for his low-profile leadership style, Noel Tata stands in contrast to Ratan Tata's highly visible public presence. While Ratan Tata often engaged with the media, Noel has focused on the group’s international ventures and its retail business behind the scenes.
Ratan Tata was the last person to serve as both chairman of Tata Trusts and chairman emeritus of Tata Sons. However, in 2022, Tata Sons’ board made an important change to its Articles of Association, ensuring that no individual can hold both positions simultaneously.
During a legal dispute with Cyrus Mistry, Ratan Tata once remarked that while he was the chairman at the time, it could be someone else in the future, adding that it wasn’t necessary for the person to have the Tata surname. He emphasized that individuals are finite, but organizations continue.
Noel Tata has been associated with the Tata group for over 40 years. He holds several key positions across Tata companies, including Chairman of Tata International Limited, Voltas, and Tata Investment Corporation. He also serves as Vice Chairman of Tata Steel and Titan Company Limited.
Previously, Noel served as the Managing Director of Trent for over 11 years, where he helped grow the company into a ₹2.8 lakh crore business. He was also the Managing Director of Tata International Limited from 2010 to 2021, where he increased the company’s turnover from $500 million to over $3 billion.
A graduate of Sussex University in the UK, Noel Tata has also completed the International Executive Programme at INSEAD.
Noel's son, Neville Tata, joined Trent in 2016 and now leads Star Bazaar, indicating the rise of the next generation of the Tata family. His daughters are also involved in the family’s business ventures. Leah Tata is currently overseeing the Gateway brand at Indian Hotels, while Maya Tata, who is focused on analytics and technology, works at Tata Digital. Leah, Maya, and Neville are all trustees of several affiliated trusts under the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Sir Ratan Tata Trust.
Noel Tata continues to serve as chairman of Voltas and as a trustee of Tata Trusts, which holds a significant stake in Tata Sons.
