The Odisha government has announced that it will implement the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in all state-run universities and affiliated colleges starting from the current academic year. This decision, made by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, aims to reform the state's higher education system. The NEP focuses on promoting research and innovation through various schemes and emphasizes practical-based learning and skill development through industry internships. It also aims to create more employment-oriented courses that align with industry requirements. As part of the NEP implementation, four-year undergraduate programs will replace the traditional three-year courses. Students will have the opportunity to earn a certificate, diploma, degree, or honours degree after completing each year of the program. To support this, the state government has developed a credit framework based on guidelines set by the University Grants Commission (UGC). Under this framework, students will be able to engage in skill development, internships, community service, extracurricular activities, and participation in NCC and NSS to earn credits. The new system will allow students greater flexibility by offering multiple entries and exits, with the option to complete their degree within seven years. This approach also empowers students to choose their subjects according to their interests. In an effort to enhance the quality and inclusiveness of higher education, the state has approved the launch of 112 multidisciplinary courses, 14 vocational courses, 56 value-added courses, and 84 skill development courses. Additionally, the government has finalized a detailed syllabus for 40 core undergraduate degree courses.
