Omar Abdullah: Article 370 Reinstatement Tied to Change in Central Govt

Omar Abdullah, Vice President of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC), discussed his party's position on the abrogation of Article 370 following the recent election victory. He emphasized that while the issue remains significant, expecting its reinstatement under the current central government is unrealistic.

Abdullah stated, “Our political stand won't change. We never said that we would be silent on the issue of Article 370 or that it is not an issue for us anymore. But we are not ready to fool people. I have always said that expectations of getting it back from people who scrapped Article 370 is foolishness.”

As he prepares to potentially take on the role of Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Abdullah reiterated that his party will not mislead the public regarding Article 370. He criticized the Narendra Modi-led central government, asserting that discussions about reinstating Article 370 are unlikely until there is a change in leadership.

“We hope that one day the government would change, the Prime Minister would change, and there would be a government with whom we would be able to talk on this issue and gain something for J&K,” Abdullah remarked.

The push for restoring statehood to Jammu and Kashmir has emerged as a central theme for various parties in the region. While Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has repeatedly highlighted the ongoing fight for the special status of Jammu and Kashmir, the Abdullah family, including NC Chief Farooq Abdullah, focuses on broader development issues.

Since the abrogation of Article 370 on August 5, 2019, Jammu and Kashmir was divided into two Union Territories, leading to significant political changes in the region.
