Omicron impact can lead to the return of curbs for extensive travel: IATA

The impact of Omicron could result in the reinstatement of broad travel restrictions, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA). The IATA said, the rapid appearance of Covid-19's Omicron variant may force countries to re-impose substantial travel restrictions. The rapid enforcement of stringent new travel regulations as a result of Omicron, according to IATA, has greatly exacerbated uncertainty.

In its Air Passenger Market Analysis for October 2021, it stated, "Any major surge in worldwide Revenue Passenger Kilometres (RPK) is unlikely in the next 2-3 months." The RPKs are used to measure the volume of air passengers.

According to the IATA, it is too early to determine the impact of the variant on new instances, and it has not yet been adequately documented in booking data. "However, it greatly increases the risk of the air travel recovery reversing for a time beginning in late November." The growing trend in overseas RPKs is projected to continue in November, according to travel bookings. "However, it is unlikely that this will last until December." Furthermore, domestic RPKs may deteriorate again in November, owing in part to breakouts and new limitations in Russia and China," the report said.
