France: Because of the rapid spread of the omicron coronavirus variant, France will restrict arrivals from the United Kingdom, limiting the reasons for travel and demanding 48-hour isolation upon arrival, according to a government spokesman. The new regulations are set to go into force this weekend. On Friday, the government will conduct a special virus security meeting to address the increasing burden on hospitals in France as a result of increased infections in recent weeks. In France, delta is still the most common variant, but omicron is growing so quickly in Britain that it's causing anxiety on both sides of the Channel. On BFM television, French government spokesperson Gabriel Attal warned that tourism and business travels from the United Kingdom to France "would be limited," while French people will still be able to travel. All persons travelling from the United Kingdom must have a recent negative viral test, test again upon arrival, and isolate "in a place they pick" for at least 48 hours pending the results, according to Attal. The United Kingdom had the largest number of confirmed new COVID-19 infections since the pandemic began on Wednesday, and England's top medical officer warned that the situation is expected to worsen as the omicron form causes a new wave of illness over the Christmas holidays.
