On this day: This Veteran played 145-run knock in T20I

Australia's all-rounder Glenn Maxwell scored 145 runs against Sri Lanka in a T20I match on this day five years ago.

Maxwell scored 145 runs off 65 balls to help Australia reach 263/3 in the allocated 20 overs. Australia had set the record for greatest team total in men's T20Is at the moment.

Maxwell's innings is the fourth-highest in T20I history. Aaron Finch, who played a 172-run innings against Zimbabwe in 2018, set the record for the highest score. In the match between Australia and Sri Lanka at Pallekele, the latter won the toss and opted to field first.  For the visitors, Maxwell and David Warner opened the batting with a 57-run partnership in the first five overs. In the fifth over, Warner (28) was sent back to the pavilion, but Maxwell got support from Usman Khawaja and Travis Head as Australia grabbed complete control of the game.

In his innings, the right-handed Maxwell smashed 14 boundaries and 9 sixes, putting Sri Lanka on the back foot. As Australia amassed a total of over 260 runs, Maxwell remained undefeated. The visitors then gained a comfortable victory by 85 runs after reducing Sri Lanka to 178/9. For Australia, Mitchell Starc and Scott Boland scalped three wickets each.
