Onion compound found to have anti-ovarian cancer effects !

Onions are known to be high in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants, and has many health benefits including lowering the risk of certain cancers and also helping with depression. Now, a new study that was published in Scientific Reports from the Kumamoto University Japan has found that a compound found in onions has anti-ovarian cancer effects.

A 2014 review from the World Health Organization (WHO) stated that epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) was the most common type of cancer with a 5-year survival rate of 40%, and about 80% with EOC had a relapse after initial chemotherapy. The researchers looked into the effects that a compound in onion that is called onionin A or ONA has on EOC. They found that the growth of EOCs slowed down after ONA was introduced.

The researchers say their study shows that ONA slows down the progression of ovarian cancer tumors by interrupting the myeloid cells pro-tumor activity.
