New Delhi, India - The 5G revolution is in full swing in India, as the country achieved an unprecedented milestone with over 100 million 5G smartphone shipments in the month of May. The rapid pace of 5G roll-out across the nation has been confirmed by market intelligence firm CyberMedia Research (CMR), which shared data indicating a staggering growth of more than 28 times since the initial introduction of 5G smartphones. Notably, 48% of the smartphone market in May was dominated by 5G shipments, with Samsung leading the charge, closely followed by OnePlus and Vivo. Collectively, these three brands claimed an impressive 60% market share in the 5G segment, as highlighted by Shipra Sinha, an analyst from CMR's Industry Intelligence Group. As 5G technology continues to penetrate various regions in India, the 5G smartphone market is projected to witness a remarkable expansion of over 70% year-on-year by the end of this year. The growth trajectory of 5G in India has been exceptional, with the number of 5G shipments surging more than 13 times since its introduction in 2020. Last year alone, close to 100 new 5G smartphones were launched in the Indian market. However, the key to widespread adoption of 5G in India lies in the availability of affordable smartphones in this segment. A previous study by CMR emphasized that the introduction of 5G smartphones priced below Rs 10,000 will play a vital role in driving mass adoption. In October 2022, Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel kickstarted their 5G network roll-outs, covering a significant portion of the country. This crucial step sets the stage for a more connected and technologically advanced India. With the 5G revolution gaining momentum and surpassing the 100 million mark, India is poised to embrace the transformative power of this next-generation technology, unlocking new possibilities and opportunities for its people.
