Over 45 Senior Doctors Resign at RG Kar Hospital, Demand Justice for Rape-Murder Victim

Kolkata: Over 45 senior doctors and faculty members of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital resigned on Tuesday, standing in solidarity with junior doctors protesting the brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor in the hospital's premises in August. The mass resignation comes as junior doctors continue their 'fast-unto-death,' demanding justice for the victim and the resignation of corrupt officials linked to the incident.

Senior doctors expressed dissatisfaction over the lack of progress in the investigation and criticized the hospital administration for not addressing the demands of the protesting junior doctors. They urged the authorities to engage in reconciliation talks, citing the deteriorating health of those on hunger strike.

In their letter to the hospital administration, the senior doctors warned that if the situation remains unchanged, they would move towards individual resignations as well. They also called for urgent action from the government, stating, "The health of the protesting doctors is deteriorating, and the government seems oblivious to this health disaster."

Meanwhile, the Joint Platform of Doctors (JPD) also expressed support for the junior doctors, stating that the ongoing protest was a call for justice against a corrupt syndicate and for the creation of a patient-friendly system. The JPD leaders, Punyabrata Gun and Hiralal Konar, said the protests aimed to safeguard the campus democracy and called upon private practitioners to join in solidarity if government doctors follow through with mass resignations.

Despite Durga Puja festivities, junior doctors have continued their hunger strike for the fourth consecutive day, with around 15 senior doctors joining them in a symbolic hunger strike to press for justice for the victim. The protests reflect the growing frustration and determination within the medical community to seek justice and bring about change in the hospital's administration.
