Shocking revelation in Oxfam report '11 people die of hunger each minute'

New Delhi: Oxfam, an organisation for poverty alleviation, has said that hunger kills 11 people every minute and the number of people facing famine-like conditions has increased six times across the world in the last one year. Oxfam said in a report titled 'The Hunger Virus Multiples' that the death toll due to starvation has exceeded the number of people who died due to Covid-19.

Covid-19 kills about seven people every minute in the world. "The figures are shocking," said Abby Maxman, president and CEO of Oxfam USA. But let us not forget that these figures are made up of those who are going through unimaginable suffering. The report said that about 155 million people in the world are facing a severe food insecurity crisis and this figure is 20 million more than last year's figures. Nearly two-thirds of them are starving and this is because of the ongoing military conflict in their country.

"The economic side effects of Covid-19 and the merciless conflicts, the worsening climate crisis, have put more than 520,000 people on the brink of starvation," Maxman said. Instead of combating the global epidemic, conflicting factions are fighting each other, which ultimately affects millions of people who are already reeling under weather disasters and financial shocks.
