PESHAWAR: Heavy rains continued to batter areas of Pakistan that had already been devastated by catastrophic floods of historic proportions, unleashing a new wave of death and damage in the provinces of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, and Sindh. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa , where heavy rains for the second day in a row caused devastating floods in rivers and streams that also swept away several homes near their banks and hotels in hilly resorts, scores of people perished, while Balochistan remained cut off from the rest of the country due to fresh rains, as per reports. The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government declared rain emergency in several districts as flash floods triggered by torrential rains wreaked havoc in most parts of the province, raising the province-wide death toll to at least 238 people, officials said. They also said that the rain emergency, which was immediately put into action, will last until August 30 due to a monsoon forecast from the Pakistan Meteorological Department, the reports add. On the second day in a row, numerous areas of the province were pummelling by fresh torrential rain. According to government records, a flash flood caused by heavy rain in the Kaghan Valley killed 10 persons in the Munnawar Nullah. Due to the extreme flooding in the stream, more than ten stores, two motels, and eight automobiles were destroyed in Mahandri. A mosque, two schools and a police post were also damaged. People on the banks of the Kunhar River had relocated to safer locations while numerous sections of the Kaghan highway were closed to traffic.
