Pakistan's inflation is at its highest level in two years

Poverty Stricken Pakistan is still suffering from rising inflation. In January, the country's overall inflation, as measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI), reached a 24-month high of 13%, as prices of practically all goods and utilities continued to rise.

Perishable and non-perishable food goods, energy, transportation, apparel, restaurants, and health were among the industries that saw double-digit price increases in January 2021, according to media reports. While household and energy prices increased by 15.5 percent, the transportation sector led the inflationary trend with a 23% rise, followed by perishable and non-perishable food goods at 13% and 14%, restaurants and hotels at 13%, and clothing at 12%.

CPI inflation has been at this level since January 2020, when it was 14.6%. In January 2022, CPI inflation for urban populations climbed by 13% year on year (YoY), compared to 12.7 percent the previous month and 5% in January 2021. According to media reports, CPI inflation for rural populations grew by 12.9 percent year over year in January 2022, compared to 11.6 percent the previous month and 6.6 percent in January 2021.
