RAMALLAH: Palestine has warned that allowing Israeli settlers to visit the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in Jerusalem's old city during the "Second Jewish Passover" on Sunday will have dire consequences. The Palestinian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the Israeli government is accountable for the consequences if a war occurs. Earlier on Saturday, Jewish "Temple Mount" groups used social media to encourage their Jewish supporters to gather at Al-Aqsa Mosque on Sunday to commemorate the "Second Jewish Passover." The Palestinian Foreign Ministry has appealed to the international world and the United States to intervene immediately and put pressure on Israel's government to end settler visits to the Al-Aqsa Mosque. The Al-Aqsa compound witnessed intense clashes between Israeli police and Palestinian worshipers protesting against Jewish visits to their sacred site in April, during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan and the Jewish Passover. Tensions at the Al-Aqsa Mosque could lead to a military clash between armed Palestinian factions and Israel, similar to Israel's recent offensive in the Gaza Strip in May 2021. The Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem's ancient city is the world's first shrine and third mosque for Muslims. They refer to it as al-Haram al-Sharif, whereas Jews refer to it as "The Temple Mount."
