Demand for a male nurse has been triggered because of the Pandemic

The Pandemic has triggered the demand for Male nurses in North Karnataka. Many female nurses face family pressure as they have a possibility of carrying the disease and infecting the people at home and inside the hospital premises of the non-corona zone. The hospitals too are not interested in filling the nurse posts with women understanding the family pressure on women. This resulted in an increase in demand for male nurses who have shifted to Tier-1 cities because of salary. At the current situation, Tier-2 and Tier-3 city hospitals are ready to offer salary on par with Tier-1 city hospitals.

Dr. Sanjay M Peerapur, state president, Karnataka Nurses Association Hubballi, Principal of KLES’ Institute of Nursing Sciences, said the demand for male nurses has been rising for the past two years. “However, the pandemic has multiplied the demand, especially in districts of North Karnataka”. He added, “Admission of boys to nursing courses was below 2.5% in 2013-14 but this year it has crossed 20%.The jobs is considered most appropriate for women, but that gender line is now blurring”. Vincent Patil, the Nursing superintendent of Sankanur Hospital said, “Private hospitals are now hiring male nurses, but it doesn’t mean men are grabbing jobs for women. Many women are quitting due to family and psychological reasons. The profession has peaked due to the pandemic”.

Saroja, a senior nurse in Koppal, said, “Many woman staff faced hurdles reaching their workplaces during the lockdown and could not attend to work. Hospitals, therefore, prefer men who can stay on the premises during emergencies or can reach the workplace on their own. However, we feel it’s just a temporary phase”, in an admitting note.
