'Peaceful nukes, defence capabilities' are irreplaceable: Iran

Maintaining and strengthening the country's peaceful nuclear and defence capabilities, according to a top Iranian security official, are "options that are never taken away from the table."

According to a well-known media source, Ali Shamkhani, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), made the statements in a tweet a day after millions of Iranians commemorated the 43rd anniversary of the Islamic Revolution's victory in 1979. "Glorious presence of Iran in ceremonies in support of the Islamic establishment," he tweeted, "maintaining and enhancing Iran's peaceful nuclear capacity and defence capabilities, (as well as) regional security-making policies of the Islamic Republic."

The remarks come at a time when envoys from Iran and other countries are meeting in Vienna, Austria, to try to salvage a 2015 nuclear deal known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) (JCPOA).
