Consumption of petrol and diesel decreased by 66 percent in April, will have a big impact on prices

New Delhi: Petrol and diesel consumption in the country has come down by 66 percent in April, which is one third less than the same period last year. During this period, the demand for aircraft fuel (ATF) has also fallen by 90 percent. Officials in the petroleum industry say that the fuel consumption has declined due to the closure of all business activities, restriction on vehicular traffic and flight restrictions.

However, during this period, domestic LPG cylinder (LPG) sales have increased by 30 percent due to increasing demand. According to the data (provisional) of the Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum, the consumption of petrol has decreased to 2.4 million tonnes and diesel to 7.3 million tonnes in April. Similarly, consumption of ATF has also reduced to 6.45 lakh tonnes. Officials say that in March 2020, fuel sales in the country have come down to a low of more than a decade.

This has had a direct impact on fuel consumption in April as well. In March, the sale of petroleum products was down 17.79 per cent to 16 million tonnes. However, LPG sales rose 1.9 per cent to 2.3 million tonnes last month due to a surge in bookings.
