The launch of the much-awaited PM Internship Scheme has been delayed, with no new date set yet. Originally planned for December 2, the government has confirmed that the program will be rolled out in the coming weeks after a review of the pilot phase. A source familiar with the situation said, "The learnings from the pilot phase need to be thoroughly reviewed before the official launch. A new date will be announced soon." In addition to the internship scheme, the government is set to introduce an employment-linked incentive program, aiming to support young Indians in securing jobs. Both schemes are expected to be launched together as part of the government's efforts to boost employment. Interns selected for the program will receive a monthly stipend along with a one-time allowance, while companies participating in the scheme will cover the costs of training. Officials said the government is considering formally launching the internship scheme and the incentive program later this month. Although the original launch date of December 2 has been delayed, a new date is expected to be set soon. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to launch both initiatives together. The PM Internship Scheme was introduced in the Union Budget 2024-25 as part of the Prime Minister’s employment and skilling package. Its primary aim is to improve youth employability by providing internships at top companies. The pilot phase of the scheme targeted 1.25 lakh students, and the long-term goal is to involve 1 crore students over the next five years. During the pilot phase, companies offered 1.27 lakh internship opportunities, and over 6.21 lakh applications were received. The registration period for the program ran from October 12 to November 15, 2024, through a dedicated portal. The government allocated Rs 2,000 crore for the initiative in the 2024-25 Budget. By November 20, Rs 6.04 crore had already been used. Eligible candidates, aged 21 to 24 and with at least a Class 10 education, will receive a one-time allowance of Rs 6,000 and a monthly stipend of Rs 4,500. Additionally, participating companies will contribute Rs 500 per month. The list of 500 companies involved in the program has been selected based on their average Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) expenditure over the last three years. Participation in the scheme is voluntary. Despite the temporary delay, the government remains committed to the long-term goal of providing young people with valuable experience at some of India's top firms.
