PM Modi Reaches Russia for BRICS Summit, Set for Key Discussions on Global Issues

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Kazan, Russia, on Tuesday to attend the 16th BRICS Summit, following an invitation from Russian President Vladimir Putin. The summit, themed "Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security," will serve as a critical platform for global leaders to address pressing international concerns.

Ahead of his departure, PM Modi emphasized India's commitment to BRICS, highlighting the forum's role in addressing global developmental challenges, reformed multilateralism, climate change, economic cooperation, and strengthening cultural ties. He also underscored the impact of BRICS' expansion last year, which has made the group more inclusive.

“My visit to Kazan will further strengthen the Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership between India and Russia. I also look forward to meeting other BRICS leaders," Modi said before leaving.

During the summit, the Prime Minister is expected to engage in bilateral talks with leaders from BRICS member nations and invited countries. These meetings will explore progress in past initiatives and future collaboration opportunities.

The BRICS leaders will focus on key areas of cooperation, including politics and security, economics and finance, as well as cultural and humanitarian initiatives. The potential expansion of BRICS through the creation of a new partnership category will also be a central discussion point.

Various reports, including from the New Development Bank and the Women's Business Alliance, will be presented during the summit, with outcomes to be reflected in the Kazan Summit Declaration.

On Wednesday, a special session in the ‘BRICS Plus’ format will be held, featuring representatives from nearly 40 nations. Among them will be leaders from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, and international organizations.

The summit will also address international concerns, particularly the worsening situation in the Middle East, and how BRICS can support the Global South in achieving sustainable development goals.
