PM Modi sees dynasty politics as a threat to democracy

New Delhi, India: Prime Minister Narendra Modi slammed dynastic politics on Friday, saying that if a party is run by one family for many generations, it isn't good for a functioning democracy.

'A party for the family,  by the family...do I need to say anything else? "It is not good for a strong democracy if a party is run by one family for many generations," Prime Minister Modi remarked at a Constitution Day event in the Parliament's Central Hall.

"When political parties lose their democratic character in themselves, the spirit of the Constitution is also harmed, and every component of the Constitution is also harmed." "How can parties that have lost their democratic nature defend democracy?" the Prime Minister wondered. Modi went on to say, "On merit, more than one member from a single family can enter politics, and this will not make the party family-oriented." "However, one family has been in politics for generations".  He also stated that the country is approaching a crisis for family-run political groups.  In addition, the Prime Minister paid respect to Mahatma Gandhi and all those who struggled for India's independence.

"Constitution Day is a day to honour this House, where many of India's leaders collaborated to create the Indian Constitution. "We also pay our respects to Mahatma Gandhi and all those who battled for India's independence," he added. Every year on November 26th, Constitution Day commemorates the adoption of the Indian Constitution by the Constituent Assembly in 1949. On January 26, 1950, the Indian Republic's Constitution went into effect, ushering in a new era in the country's history.
