NEW DELHI: Mauritius Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam announced on Friday (February 21, 2025) that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be the Guest of Honour at Mauritius' 57th National Day celebrations on March 12.
Speaking in parliament, Ramgoolam said it is a great privilege for Mauritius to welcome Modi, especially given his packed schedule and recent visits to Paris and the United States. It is a true honour for our country to host such a distinguished leader," Ramgoolam stated. He also emphasized that Modi’s visit reflects the strong bond between India and Mauritius.
India-Mauritius Ties Strengthen
Mauritius celebrates its National Day on March 12 each year, marking its independence from Britain in 1968 and its transition to a republic in 1992. India has consistently prioritized its relationship with Mauritius under its Neighbourhood First, Vision SAGAR, Global South, and Africa Forward policies. Both nations share a vision for a secure and prosperous Indian Ocean region.
India’s Support for Mauritius on Chagos Islands
India also backed Mauritius in its long-standing claim over the Chagos Islands, previously under British control. After decades of diplomatic efforts, the UK finally transferred sovereignty of the Chagos Archipelago to Mauritius in October last year. India played a quiet but important role in this transition.
In July 2024, External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar visited Mauritius for two days. He met with then-Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth and Ramgoolam to discuss key areas of cooperation, including economic ties, defense, maritime security, and cultural exchanges. He reaffirmed India’s commitment to supporting Mauritius in its development journey.About Mauritius National Day
