Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to participate in the forthcoming World Climate Action Summit scheduled to take place in Dubai on December 1, as announced by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). The summit is expected to convene heads of states, leaders from various sectors, and advocates to strategize and amplify efforts toward combating climate change. The Prime Minister's attendance at the World Climate Action Summit, a part of the 28th Conference of Parties (COP-28) under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), signifies India's commitment to addressing global environmental challenges. This critical gathering aims to discuss and devise plans encompassing crucial aspects such as finance, emissions reduction, adaptation strategies, and the transition to an inclusive green economy. Scheduled to arrive in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on November 30, PM Modi's participation has been prompted by an invitation extended by H.H. Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of UAE and Ruler of Abu Dhabi. The COP-28, spanning from November 28 to December 12, 2023, holds a paramount role under the UAE's Presidency. Moreover, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav will join high-level discussions and roundtables during COP28, focusing on pivotal areas such as financial support for climate goals, reduction of emissions, and fostering a sustainable green economy. Anticipated negotiations during the climate conference will revolve around critical aspects such as the operational framework for funds aiding developing nations impacted by climate change. There's an expectation for intensified discussions regarding global north's responsibility to accelerate decarbonization and increase financial and technological assistance to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. Additionally, the conference might witness efforts by certain nations, particularly the European Union, to push for a universal agreement aimed at phasing out fossil fuels without emissions reduction technologies. PM Modi's previous commitments and India's proactive initiatives, including the "Panchamrit" targets and the Mission Lifestyle for Environment (LiFE), announced during COP-26, underscore India's firm commitment to climate action. India's G20 Presidency also highlighted climate change as a critical agenda, reflecting in the New Delhi Leaders' Declaration and other significant outcomes. The Prime Minister's visit will include bilateral discussions with various leaders attending the summit, as stated by the MEA. PM Modi's engagement is expected to contribute significantly to the ongoing global discourse on combating climate change and advancing sustainable solutions.
