PM Modi tweets : India remembers 1975 Emergency as 'dark period'

 

New Delhi [India], June 26 (NT): After backing FM Arun Jaitely for his Hitler remark for Indira Gandhi Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said the country remembers the 1975 Emergency as a 'dark period', during which every institution was threatened and a feeling of fear was created.

The Prime Minister also saluted the bravery of those who persistently refused to accept the Emergency, which was fixed firmly 43 years ago.

Taking to Twitter Prime Minister Modi asserted in a series of tweets

"India remembers the Emergency as a dark period during which every institution was subverted and an atmosphere of fear was created. Not only people but also ideas and artistic freedom were held hostage to power politics.”

"I salute the courage of all those great women and men who steadfastly resisted the Emergency, which was imposed 43 years ago. Their struggles ensured people power prevailed over authoritarianism and the stifling of civil liberties," PM Modi said in his second tweet.

"Let us always work to make our democratic ethos stronger. Writing, debating, deliberating, questioning are vital aspects of our democracy which we are proud of. No force can ever trample the basic tenets of our Constitution," the third tweet of PM said.

 As we all know that June 25 marks the day when Indira Gandhi had declared a state of Emergency in the nation for a 21-month period from 1975 to 1977, which was officially issued by then President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed under Article 352 of the Constitution due of the current "internal disturbance". The Emergency was in effect from June 25, 1975, until it’s taking out on March 21, 1977.

The 1975 Emergency is considered to be one of the most controversial periods of free India's history.
