PM Modi's Intervention: Progress in Case of 8 Indian Sailors Sentenced to Death in Qatar

New Delhi: A significant breakthrough has been achieved in the case of the death sentence handed to 8 Indian sailors in Qatar. The Indian Ambassador has secured consular access (diplomatic access) in this sensitive matter. The Indian diplomat has met with these individuals and briefed them on the case. The case has undergone two hearings, with the next one scheduled soon.

It has been revealed that during Prime Minister Modi's visit to Dubai, where he attended the UN Climate Summit, he also held a meeting with the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani. During this meeting, the topic of the punishment of the 8 former marines was discussed, leading to the announcement of diplomatic access for them.

The Ministry of External Affairs has stated that they are closely monitoring the situation and providing all legal and consular assistance. Additionally, the Indian Ambassador has met with all eight individuals in jail.

To provide context, eight former Indian Navy personnel arrested in Qatar last year were sentenced to death by the Qatari court on October 27, 2023. It was later revealed that the Qatar Court accepted the appeal of the former Indian Navy personnel facing the death sentence, and the next hearing is expected soon. This appeal was filed by the Government of India.

The court in Qatar accepted the appeal documents on November 23, and the court is currently reviewing the appeal, with the next hearing anticipated in the near future. India's Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Arindam Bagchi, confirmed in his last weekly briefing that India had "already filed an appeal" against the decision.
