PM Modi’s Visit to Kuwait Today, Boosting India-Kuwait Relations

Prime Minister Narendra Modi embarks on a two-day visit to Kuwait today, marking a significant milestone in the strengthening of India-Kuwait relations. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) emphasized that this visit aims to foster a dynamic partnership between the two nations, focusing on key areas such as defence and trade.

Invited by Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, Modi's visit holds historical significance as it comes 43 years after the last visit by an Indian Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, in 1981. During his visit, Prime Minister Modi is set to hold meaningful discussions with Kuwait's leadership, focusing on strengthening bilateral ties and exploring areas of mutual cooperation. Additionally, he will connect with the dynamic Indian diaspora in Kuwait, which proudly represents the largest expatriate community in the country.

Expanding Economic and Trade Ties

India and Kuwait share a robust trade relationship, with bilateral trade reaching an impressive USD 10.47 billion in the financial year 2023-24. Kuwait is India’s sixth-largest supplier of crude oil, fulfilling 3% of its energy needs. Indian exports to Kuwait have crossed the USD 2 billion mark for the first time, while the Kuwait Investment Authority’s investments in India have surpassed USD 10 billion.

Historical Bonds and Shared Heritage

India and Kuwait's relationship is deeply rooted in history, dating back to pre-oil Kuwait when maritime trade formed the backbone of its economy. Wooden dhows carried Arabian horses, dates, and pearls from Kuwait to India, in exchange for wood, cereals, clothes, and spices. The Indian Rupee remained legal tender in Kuwait until 1961, symbolizing the enduring economic and cultural connections.

Diplomatic relations were officially established in 1961, with India represented by a trade commissioner initially. The strong historical ties have been complemented by high-level visits, including the private visit of Emir Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmed Al Jaber Al Sabah to India in 2017 and the Kuwaiti Prime Minister’s visit in 2013.

As Prime Minister Modi embarks on this landmark visit, the focus remains on deepening the historical and strategic ties that have linked the two nations for generations.
