President and PM React to Parliament Mimicry Incident; Opposition Claims Distraction from MP Suspension

NEW DELHI: President Droupadi Murmu expressed dismay over the recent incident where suspended TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee mimicked Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankar outside the Parliament. Murmu conveyed her concern, stating that witnessing the humiliation of the respected Vice President was disheartening.

In a statement posted on her official social media handle, President Murmu emphasized the importance of maintaining dignity and courtesy within the parliamentary norms. She highlighted that the Indian populace takes pride in the country's parliamentary traditions and expects its representatives to uphold these values.

Reacting to the incident, Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar revealed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed distress over the episode in the 'sacred' Parliament complex. Dhankhar shared that during a telephone call, the Prime Minister expressed regret, citing his own experience of enduring similar insults for two decades. He deemed it unfortunate that such disrespect was directed towards a Constitutional office within the Parliament.

In response, Dhankhar asserted his commitment to upholding cherished values, assuring the Prime Minister that none of the insults would deter him from fulfilling his duties in line with the Constitution.

However, Congress MP Jairam Ramesh weighed in on the situation, claiming that the mimicry incident was a deliberate attempt to divert public attention from the suspension of 141 MPs. These MPs were suspended for causing disruption and chaos in both Houses while demanding a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the Parliament security breach on December 13.

Ramesh highlighted this by sharing an old video clip of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, insinuating that the uproar over the mimicry incident was a strategic move to deflect focus from the unprecedented suspension of the 142 MPs.
