President Hollande: ‘We are extending state of emergency’

French President Francois Hollande announced the extension of France’s state of emergency by three months in the wake of a truck attack that is reported to have killed 80 people in the coastal city of Nice.

A truck loaded with weapons and hand grenades drove onto a sidewalk for more than a mile, ploughing through Bastille Day revellers who’d gathered to watch fireworks in the French resort city of Nice late on Thursday.

The state of emergency, in place since November attacks that killed 130 in Paris, was to due to be removed on 26 July.
