Price Increase Hits Vegetarian Thali by 10% in June, Non-vegetarian Thali Declines: Report

Roti Rice Rate Analysis: The average cost of a vegetarian thali surged by 10% in June, driven by substantial increases in onion, potato, and tomato prices, according to a report released on Friday by Crisil Market Intelligence and Analysis. Meanwhile, the cost of a non-vegetarian meal decreased due to lower broiler prices, as per Crisil's monthly "Roti Rice Rate" report.

In June, the cost of a veg thali, including roti, vegetables (onions, tomatoes, potatoes), rice, dal, curd, and salad, rose to Rs 29.4 per plate from Rs 26.7 a year ago, and up from Rs 27.8 in May 2024.

The price hike in vegetarian thali is attributed to a 30% increase in tomato prices, 59% in potato prices, and 46% in onion prices.

Onion prices saw reduced arrivals due to a significant drop in rabi acreage, while potatoes suffered lower yields from unseasonal rainfall in March, the report explained.

Tomato prices surged due to virus infestation in summer crops in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, leading to a 35% decline in year-on-year arrivals.

Rice prices increased by 13% due to reduced acreage and subdued arrivals, while pulse prices rose by 22% owing to dry spells during key kharif months.

In contrast, the non-vegetarian thali, which substitutes dal with chicken but includes the same ingredients, saw its price decline to Rs 58 in June from Rs 60.5 a year ago, yet it was higher than May's Rs 55.9 per thali.

The decrease in non-vegetarian thali prices was attributed to a 14% year-on-year decrease in broiler prices, oversupply, and reduced feed costs compared to the previous year.

The report highlighted that both vegetarian and non-vegetarian meal prices increased from the previous month primarily due to soaring vegetable prices.
