New Delhi: Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh emphasized the importance of the private sector in transforming India’s defence industry during his address at the DRDO Industry Workshop on defence technology acceleration in Delhi. He highlighted the private sector’s capacity to drive innovation and respond swiftly to evolving technological challenges. Singh pointed out that the influence of technology on the defence sector extends beyond traditional warfare, introducing complexities such as drones, cyber warfare, bio-weapons, and space defence. These new challenges require a proactive approach from the private sector. “I think the time has come for the private sector to take the lead in defence sector participation. The private industry has the capability not only to absorb rapid changes but also to create new innovations,” he stated. The Defence Minister assured that the Government of India, in collaboration with the Ministry of Defence, is committed to enhancing the defence sector's innovative and technological aspects. He noted, “We are constantly striving for this, and its results are already visible.” Singh also stressed the importance of collaborative efforts among scientists, industrialists, academia, startups, MSMEs, and young entrepreneurs in defence research and development. “The form of conventional warfare we see today is much different from what it was 50-60 years ago. Technology has revolutionized this field, giving rise to unconventional warfare elements that challenge the sector.” He also expressed confidence that ongoing advancements in defence R&D, supported by various stakeholders, would further strengthen India’s defence capabilities.
