Shillong : A full-fledged Vice-Chancellor was appointed in the North Eastern Hills University (NEHU) on July 22. “Am directed to state that the President of India in his capacity as the Visitor of North Eastern Hill University has been pleased to appoint Prof. Prabha Shankar Shukla,” Vijay Kumar, Under Secretary to the Government of India stated in a letter to the University’s Registrar. Shukla is a Professor, at G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar, Uttarakhand. He will be at the helm for a term of five years from the date on which he enters upon his office, or until he attains the age of 70 years, whichever is earlier. He takes over from Prof. S. K. Srivasatva. It may be mentioned that several groups like the NEHUTA, MeTTA, KSU, HYC had demanded the appointment of an indigenous person as Vice-Chancellor of NEHU. On Thursday, the KSUI had written to Union Education Minister – Dharmendra Pradhan, urging him to appoint Prof. Sherwin May Sungoh as the next Vice Chancellor of NEHU. Earlier, Health and Family Welfare Minister and BJP legislator A. L. Hek had also urged the centre to appoint a indigenous person as Vice-Chancellor of the University.
