Amritsar: Malerkotla has been declared as the 23rd district of Punjab. CM Captain Amarinder Singh has declared Malerkotla as a district on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr and announced the appointment of a new DC for the new district on Friday. Announcing the gifts to malerkotla residents, the Captain said that a medical college will be set up in Malerkotla at a cost of Rs 500 crore in the name of Sher Mohammad Khan. He said another college for girls will be set up at a cost of Rs 12 crore. A bus stand, a women's police station will also be set up, which will be run only by women employees. The new district, Malerkotla is the only Muslim dominated area of Punjab. Sher Mohammad Khan, nawab of Malerkotla, had supported the younger Sahibzads of Shri Guru Gobind Singh ji opposing the Subedar of Sirhind. Because of this, he has a respectable place in the history of Punjab. Nawab Sher Muhammad Khan had openly opposed the order of Shri Guru Gobind Singh ji to give a spark to the living wall of both the younger Sahibzads Baba Zorawar Singh and Baba Fateh Singh, who were seven years old and nine years old at the time. On learning about this brave move of Nawab Sher Muhammad Khan, Damesh's father, Shri Guru Gobind Singh ji, blessed him and promised him the safety of Malerkotla. Guru Sahib ji had also sent Nawab Sher Muhammad Khan to Sri Sahib.
